Spy shots: Could Sony’s new helmet cam be a GoPro killer?
Think helmet cams and you think GoPro, or maybe Contour or Drift. Well, those guys must be quaking in their boots now that global electronics giants Sony are developing their own POV action camera.
Apparently it’s going to be “tiny and lightweight”, with SteadyShot image stabilisation and an ultra-wide-angle Carl Zeiss lens, plus a choice of “ruggedized and waterproof” housings. So far, so good then.
With JVC launching an action cam, Polaroid getting in on the act too and suggestions that Google may enter the market with some fancy glasses, it looks like the helmet cam scene could be blown wide open.
Mind you, GoPro are so ubiquitous – they’re the Hoover or iPod of the POV camera world – and frankly so damn good, that it’ll be tough for even Sony to knock them from their pedestal, unless they can bring some amazing new tech to the table, or much lower pricing.

What resolution will it be? The logo says HD (1,280×720 pixels) but we hope it’ll be Full HD (1,920×1,080)
