New GoPro HERO3 is smaller, lighter, faster and shoots in Ultra HD

The GoPro HERO3 is here and it looks amazing! The new camera body is 30% smaller and 25% lighter, and there have been some big changes inside too – the top model offers four times the resolution of the HD HERO2 and can shoot at twice the speed. There are going to be a lot of unhappy faces at other helmet cam companies today!

There are three new models: the $399 (£359.99) HERO3 Black Edition, $299.99 (£279.99) HERO3 Silver Edition and $199.99 (£199.99) HERO3 White Edition. All share the same body – which now has built-in Wi-Fi so you can pair it with GoPro’s new smartphone app to adjust settings, frame shots and play back footage – but their capabilities vary massively

While the Black Edition can shoot in Full HD (1,080 pixels) at 60 frames per second and can even capture massive 4,000p Ultra HD footage (though only at a paltry 12fps), the other two models can only shoot Full HD at 30fps and don’t offer UHD shooting. Basically, the Silver Edition is the HD HERO2 in a new body and the White Edition is the HD HERO – even the prices remain the same.

Here’s how the three ‘editions’ stack up. Turn the page to see video footage from all three cameras, plus more pictures. They should hit US shops on 21 October.
