Specialized Stumpjumper FSR EVO 26 – Best bikes and gear of 2012

Time for the first bike on our ‘Best bikes and gear of 2012’ wishlist, and what better place to begin than with the machine that started it all, the Specialized Stumpjumper? At its launch 21 years ago it was the world’s first mass-production mountain bike and the latest version is still at the top of the trail bike tree, especially in its beefed-up EVO guise.

Why we like it:

  • EVO tweaks (slacker head angle, extra travel, double-and-bash chainset) bring out the Stumpy’s inner hooligan
  • Light enough for trail duties but planted and flickable on the downhills
  • Choice of carbon (Stumpjumper FSR Expert Carbon EVO 26) and alloy (Stumpjumper FSR Comp EVO 26) models, plus 29er versions in the US
  • Comes with a dropper post as standard
  • Simple Autosag suspension setup
  • Basic model is excellent value

RRP (carbon): US$6,400 / £4,000
RRP (alloy): US$3,300 / £2,500
