GoPro HERO3 Silver Edition helmet cam – Best bikes and gear of 2012

Forget the all-singing, all-dancing Black Edition – it’s the GoPro HERO3 Silver Edition that’s earned a spot on our ‘Best bikes and gear of 2012‘ wishlist. Why? We reckon it’s the top helmet cam choice for most riders. It may only be second in the GoPro line-up but it can still shoot Full HD footage at 30 frames per second – the same as the latest top-end cameras from rivals Contour and Drift, and good enough quality for all but professional videographers.

Why we like it:

  • Full HD filming at 30 frames per second (1,920 x 1,080 pixels)
  • Standard HD filming at 60fps (1,280 x 720p)
  • 11MP stills mode
  • Tiny size (just 20mm deep) and minimal weight (73g/2.6oz)
  • Can be mounted on helmet, bars or – our favourite – your chest (with aftermarket kit)
  • Comes with waterproof housing
  • Built-in wi-fi lets you use your smartphone as a viewfinder
  • US$100/£80 cheaper than the Black Edition
