Add some danger to your mountain biking – ride an active volcano!

Jagged rocks and slippery slopes not enough of a challenge for you? How about some bubbling red hot lava and the threat of imminent death to keep you on your toes?! Sicily’s Mount Etna is Europe’s tallest active volcano – not the first spot we’d have picked for an all-mountain ride. But then Jerome Clementz isn’t just any rider…

Ignore the Gallic waffling about enduro and put up with the first minute or so of pedalling and you’ll be rewarded with the sight of one of the world’s best mountain bikers carving his way through fields of volcanic ash at stupid speed. And in case you’re thinking Etna’s not that dangerous, it erupted as recently as April last year and last week was spewing out a large plume of gas.
