Enduro racing is now a proper cycle sport – it’s got its first doping scandal

Okay, so it’s not really a joking matter, but you know a sport’s arrived when competitors take things seriously enough that they start taking performance-enhancing drugs. That’s just what’s happened with mountain biking’s ‘next big thing’, enduro racing, with details emerging of its first doping scandal.

According to the Enduro Tribe website, the French Cycling Federation banned a rider from competition for six months back in September after he tested positive for a masking agent called hydrochlorothiazide at the 2011 Megavalanche Reunion.

They haven’t released the racer’s details, on the grounds that it would impact his career outside cycling. All we know is that he was French-licensed and the suspension lasts until 20 March 2012. Let’s just hope this isn’t a sign of things to come.
